Forged fittings are the backbone of high-pressure piping systems in oil, gas, petrochemical, and industrial applications. Unlike cast fittings, forged fittings have a denser grain structure. They handle higher pressures. They resist fatigue better. They last longer.

ASME B16.11 covers forged fittings for pipe sizes from NPS ⅛ to NPS 4. For pipe sizes NPS 2 and below, forged threaded and socket weld fittings are the standard choice. Above NPS 2, buttweld fittings take over, but the cutoff is not absolute. We offer both threaded and socket weld options depending on your installation preference.

Materials we use – carbon steel and stainless steel

The material you choose determines how long the fitting lasts. We offer two main material families.

Carbon Steel – ASTM A105 / A105N

A105 is the workhorse of the forged fitting industry. It is a carbon steel forging material used for flanges and fittings in pressure systems at ambient and higher temperatures.

Carbon Steel

A105N means normalized – the steel undergoes a heat treatment that refines the grain structure and improves mechanical properties. This is what most oil, gas, and petrochemical projects specify.

Stainless Steel – ASTM A182 F304 / F304L

When you need corrosion resistance, you move to stainless. F304 is the standard 18-8 stainless steel for forged fittings. F304L has lower carbon content – better for welding because it reduces the risk of carbide precipitation. We use these for chemical plants, offshore platforms, and any environment where corrosion is a concern.

Pressure ratings and size range – what you need to know

ASME B16.11 designates pressure classes for forged fittings. For threaded end fittings, the classes are 2000LB, 3000LB, and 6000LB. For socket weld end fittings, the classes are 3000LB, 6000LB, and 9000LB.

Our standard stock covers 3000LB threaded fittings in sizes from ½″ to 4″ NPS. For socket weld, we offer 3000LB and 6000LB classes.

What does 3000LB mean? It does not mean the fitting weighs 3000 pounds. It is a pressure-temperature rating. A 3000LB fitting at ambient temperature handles pressures around 3000 PSI (approximately 207 bar). At higher temperatures, the pressure rating drops. Always check the pressure-temperature chart for your specific application.

For branch outlets (sometimes called olets or branch connections), we offer reducing configurations like ½″ × ¾″1″ × ½″, and 4″ × 6″. This lets you connect smaller branch lines to larger run pipes without additional adapters.

Thread standards – BSP and NPT

We cut threads to two main standards.

  • NPT (National Pipe Taper) – the American standard. Tapered threads that seal by wedging together. Used in North America and many oil and gas applications worldwide.
  • BSP (British Standard Pipe) – the European and international standard. Available in taper (R) and parallel (Rp) versions. Used in Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Africa.

The market for forged fittings – growing and strong

Let me share some numbers. The global forged pipe fittings market was valued at approximately USD 8.95 billion in 2024. It is projected to reach USD 13.06 billion by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 5.2%. Another report puts the forged steel fittings market at USD 480.7 million in 2025, growing to USD 734.4 million by 2032 at a CAGR of 6.24%.

The broader pipe fittings market is even larger – valued at USD 18.5 billion in 2024 and projected to reach USD 29.8 billion by 2030 at a CAGR of 8.1%.

What drives this growth? Three things.

  • First, oil and gas infrastructure. Pipeline networks are expanding rapidly to meet growing energy demands. New refineries, petrochemical plants, and LNG terminals all need forged fittings.
  • Second, industrial construction. Chemical plants, power generation facilities, and manufacturing sites use high-pressure piping systems. Forged fittings are the standard choice for these applications.
  • Third, replacement and maintenance. Old fittings wear out. Plants shut down for maintenance and replace failed components. This creates steady, recurring demand.
