The industrial world uses two main thread families. They do not work together. Never.

55° Whitworth pipe threads – used in China, Europe, UK, Australia, Southeast Asia. This includes your BSPT threads (sealing) and BSPP (non-sealing) threads.

60° American standard threads – used in North America (USA, Canada). The most common is NPT (National Pipe Taper).

The angle is different. The profile is different. You cannot screw a 55° fitting into a 60° fitting. It might go in one turn. Then it jams or leaks. I have seen contractors force them together with tools. That only damages the threads. Then you need to cut and re-thread on site.

Important warning: G (BSPP) threads are not pressure-tight by themselves. You must use a sealing ring or gasket. We see buyers mistakenly using G threads on fire risers without a gasket. That leaks. Always.

How to avoid the most common thread mistakes – real examples from our shipping desk

Mistake 1 – Ordering NPT fittings for a European project.
A customer in France ordered a container of malleable iron fittings from a supplier who only made NPT threads. The fittings arrived. The local plumbers could not install them. The thread angle did not match the existing BSP pipes. The customer lost two weeks and paid for return shipping.

Our advice: Always specify your thread standard clearly on the purchase order. Write “EN 10226-1 (R/Rp) – BSP” for Europe. Write “ASME B1.20.1 NPT” for North America. Do not assume the supplier knows your market.

Mistake 2 – Mixing Rp (parallel) and Rc (taper) internal threads in the same system.
A contractor bought gate valves with Rp internal threads and pipe fittings with Rc internal threads. The R external threads screwed into both. But the joints had different sealing characteristics. Some leaked under pressure testing. The system failed inspection.

Our advice: Pick one internal thread standard for the whole project. Use Rp for general fire protection (300 PSI). Use Rc for high pressure or gas (500 PSI). Do not mix them.

Mistake 3 – Using G threads on a pressure line without a gasket.
A buyer ordered G thread nipples and elbows for a compressed air line. He assumed the threads would seal with PTFE tape. They did not. The air leaked constantly.

Our advice: G threads are for mechanical connections only. Use R or Rc threads for any pressure application. If you must use G threads, add a bonded seal or O-ring.
