Downward Sprinkler – Pendant Sprinkler
The most common type of fire sprinkler is the downward or “pendant” sprinkler. It orients water downwards to protect the area directly beneath it, making it suitable for areas with flat ceilings.
The deflector at the base of a pendant sprinkler distributes the spray of water in a full circle to maximize coverage. This type is ideal for residential and commercial spaces with ordinary fire hazards like offices, warehouses and hotels.
Sidewall Sprinkler
Sidewall sprinklers spray out horizontally and are installed on a wall, not the ceiling. They protect areas underneath like corridors, aisles and open spaces below beams.
Upright Sprinkler – Concealed Sprinkler
The upright type fire sprinkler features a vertical orientation, with the deflector facing upwards. It is installed flush or concealed within a ceiling or soffit.
Concealed sprinklers are used when down-facing sprinklers would be aesthetically unpleasing. They are common in areas with high finishes like shopping malls, airports and stores. However, their spray coverage is more limited compared to pendant sprinklers.
Early Suppression Fast Response (ESFR) sprinklers are designed for storage occupancies where they suppress fires rather than merely controlling them. Unlike standard sprinklers, ESFR sprinklers aim to extinguish fires in their early stages before they spread. They are intended to protect rack storage without in-rack sprinklers by applying enough water quickly to penetrate the emerging flames and disrupt the fire plume.
ESFR sprinklers activate extremely fast, within 50 milliseconds in terms of Response Time Index (RTI). They are specially listed to suppress high-challenge fires in storage areas.
