Steel pipe classification method
As an important part of steel products, steel pipes are divided into two categories: seamless steel pipes (round billets) and welded steel pipes (plates, strips) due to their manufacturing processes and the shape of the pipe blanks used.

(1) Seamless steel pipe
Due to its different manufacturing processes, it is divided into two types: hot-rolled (extruded) seamless steel pipe and cold-drawn (rolled) seamless steel pipe. Cold-drawn (rolled) pipes are divided into two types: round tubes and special-shaped tubes.
a. Process overview
Hot rolled (extruded seamless steel pipe): round pipe billet → heated → perforated→ three-roll oblique rolling, continuous rolling or extrusion → de-sizing→ sizing (or reducing diameter) → cooling → billet pipe → straightening→ hydrostatic test (or flaw detection) → marking → into storage.
Cold-drawn (rolled) seamless steel pipe: round round pipe billet→ heating→perforating→ heading→ annealing→ pickling→ oiling (copper plating), →multi-pass cold-drawn (cold-rolled) →billet pipe→ heat treatment→ straightening→ hydrostatic test (flaw detection) → marking → into storage.

(2) Welded steel pipe
The blank used in welded steel pipe is steel plate or strip, which is divided into furnace welded pipe, electric welded (resistance welded) pipe and automatic arc welded pipe due to its different welding processes. Due to its different welding forms, it is divided into two types: straight seam welded pipe and spiral welded pipe. Because of its end shape, it is divided into round welded pipe and special-shaped (square, flat, etc.) welded pipe.

Sampling specifications for steel pipe inspection:
1. The specimen used for the chemical composition analysis of steel must be taken in a representative part of the steel. The specimens shall be uniform, sufficiently representative of the chemical composition of each steel and shall be sufficient in quantity.

2. Large-section steel should be drilled from the center of the steel cross-section to the middle part of the edge parallel to the axis, or drilled from the side of the steel perpendicular to the axis centerline, at which time the drilling height should reach the axis of the steel or billet.

3. For small-section steel, chips should be planed from the entire cross-section of the steel, or drilled from the cross-section along the rolling direction.

4. Specimen cutting for chemical analysis can be drilled and planed. The cutting should be crushed and mixed evenly. Water, oil or other lubricants should not be used for cutting, and the surface iron oxide scale and dirt should be removed.

5. When there is dust or oxide layer on the surface, corresponding cleaning treatment should be done.
